Between November 1919 and January 2020, Attorney General Mitchell Palmer and the new newly established General Intelligence Division, where Palmer installed a twenty-four year old psychopath named John Edgar Hoover. Within six weeks they arrested nearly 10,000 people, ( including notable anarchist Emma Goldman),in seventy cities. The immigrants rounded at that time were largely Italian and eastern European.
Although Woodrow Wilson sided with his A.G. over Labor secretary Louis Post, Post did push back and congress decided to impeach Post.
But therein came the “Shame, Mr. Palmer, moment”, as Post detailed the masochism of Hoover’s raids and that out of 10,000 arrestees Palmer wished to deport only 558 could be shown to have any connection whatsoever with communism (the “criminal” of Wilson and Palmer’s imagination).
Congressman Edward Pau, who had called for the impeachment hearings and had been a vocal supporter of the raids and the anarchist labor movement, ended the hearings by telling Post, "I feel that you have followed your sense of duty absolutely.”
Palmer however wanted to be president and campaigned on the issue to root out more immigrants and end the labor movement. The democrats decided to nominate Cox however, and American labor strongly supported the election of Warren Harding.
So we needn’t turn to thirties Europe to explain the election of Trump but 1919-1920 America.
Will there be a Lewis Post today? Will there be someone to say that it is really really really unlikely than even half of the deportees could possibly be criminals?
Or will Kash Patel become the unchecked Hoover?
I just have a few questions though which does not mean the questions are implicating the answers even though they may seem to be doing so.
Why do Trump opponents suppose they will be allowed to run against any policies in 2026? Why do they even suppose they will be allowed to challenge him as a minority party during this session? And why, prey tell {sic}, does everyone seem to think Trump will abide by court decisions? Why does no one look at the possibility of a Rhodes or Torres led paramilitary and; Hegseth rooting out any generals loyal to the constitution instead of the leader?
Why does anyone suppose that the constitution is a check or that anyone can reign in the rout of that 1789 document? Why would anyone suppose that Project 2025 is not going to soon be declared the new constitution?
And why do we all think we will be able to continue our songs of protest unchecked?
Or that resistance may need to be in the streets when the raid comes and not on pieces of paper like this?
