I guess I’m not generally known as being very romantically inclined, but last year an opera by Swedish composer, Mats Larsson, Löftet (english the Promise). I heard the opera upon its premier nearly a year ago (broadcast version). The librettist was was written by Susanne Marko.
I do not speak Swedish, but there are enough similarities to German that I can follow the story with relative ease, and upon my first hearing, I recorded the opera onto the computer and then transliterated into German.
{I suppose any who have followed me for awhile are aware that while English was my first spoken language, but German was the language in which I first learned to read.}
Löftet is a story of a young couple in love, separated when the Nazis moved into Sweden and after the war went searching for each other, finally becoming reunited. So I learned recently that Susanne Marko was writing about the story of her own parents.
I do not below this beautiful story has been otherwise recorded, but in this era in our history I want to recommend it as a great opera to uplift the “spirit” during the stress if our contemporary times. I found a version online that I believe is a preserved version of the premier night performance from January 27,2022.
